Don’t Talk to Me About Emotions, I’m Not a Woo Woo Kind of Person

I understand. Really. No one has ever accused me of wearing my heart on my sleeve. I hide my emotions pretty well. I worked with someone for nine years and no one knew how much I disliked the man. Ok, my husband knew, but my students had no idea. I’d say I did a decent job of hiding my emotions.

But suppressing my feelings of dislike for my colleague from my students meant I suppressed those emotions from myself, too (most of the time). I failed to have a face-to-face conversation with the person about some of his comments and actions. Instead, I just let my feelings of dislike simmer. And when things simmer for too long, they start to burn.

I’d like to say that I acted like a mature adult and thought through the emotions that interactions with this man raised in me, or that I confronted him about his attitudes and actions, but I didn’t. I just carried the monkey around on my back until he moved on to another job.

Today’s podcast will have five hacks for getting in touch with your emotions (without getting all touchy-feely or woowoo). Because if we want to have good emotional health, we need to learn how to deal with our emotions in ways that don’t sabotage us.
