Can out-of-control emotions ruin your physical health? The answer might surprise you. This episode of Self-Care Hacks explains the role of cortisol in your life and offers five hacks for regulating your emotions.
Is that Hanger or Anger (and Who Cares?)?
I confess I get hangry more often than I’d like to admit. Having a natural propensity towards low blood sugar doesn’t help, either. Hanger (that angry-about-everything feeling you get when you’re hungry but don’t realize it) happens when I don’t take care of myself with proper diet and exercise.
But out-of-control emotions like anger? That’s a different story. Other emotions that can quickly spiral out of control include fear, sadness, uncertainty, loneliness, and irritation. I learned the hard way what happens when out-of-control emotions (caused by a situation I couldn’t control) ruled my life for too long.
I got physically sick. Doctors couldn’t figure out what ailed me. Probably because I kept going to medical doctors instead of a counselor or psychologist. It took me seven years to sit down and really process all the emotions I’d had during my husband’s catastrophic cancer bout.
You can learn from my mistakes and save yourself hundreds of dollars in doctor bills. Learn to identify your emotions and process them in healthy ways before they get out of control and cause physical damage.
