Why Changing Your Mindset is So Important

Have you ever caught yourself saying, “I can’t do that!” Yeah. Me, too. In fact, I say it all too often (especially when it’s something I don’t particularly want to learn).

But we don’t have to tie ourselves to old narratives and mistaken beliefs. Whoever came up with the adage that you ‘can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ was wrong. Dead wrong. We all have the capacity to change. We might not have the desire to change, but we have the capacity. It turns out our brains have neuroplasticity. A fancy word for the ability to change and grow as needed.

A few years ago I had to overcome my disinclination to learn how to drive a bus in order to keep doing the things I love to do as a teacher (take students on outdoor school excursions). I didn’t want to learn how to drive a bus. Busses, especially school busses, fill up with hot air, sweaty teenagers, and noise.

I told myself I couldn’t pass the mechanical portion of the test, after all, I have no interest in mechanics. It turns out I was wrong. I was the only female at our school who took the test, and the only one who passed the mechanical part on the first try! How did I go from disgruntled commercial driver’s license candidate to happy CDL holder? Mindset.

Listen in to today’s podcast and learn how you can use the power of yet to conquer that pesky list of things you thought you’d never be able to accomplish. Changing your mindset can happen at any point in your life. You get to decide.
