Gained a few poinds? Stop beating yourself up over weight gain! It won’t do anything to help you lose weight. Weight loss is a complex problem with no one easy solution. But beating yourself up isn’t part of it.
Why You Need to Stop Beating Yourself Up Over Weight Gain
Self-flagellation doesn’t actually work. Beating yourself up mentally over every ounce or pound you gain doesn’t work either. No one likes a negative boss who always puts them down. So why would we want to pay attention to ourselves when we use negative tactics with ourselves? We wouldn’t.
I’ve been on a 20-year journey to better health. Over the past two decades I’ve tried the cabbage soup diet, the low-carb diet, the high-carb diet, the keto diet, and the I’ll-eat-whatever-I-want to diet. I’ve exercised religiously, sat on the couch, and trained for a marathon. Most of those things didn’t work long term. The one constant? Beating myself up over every ounce I’ve gained from my perceived ‘ideal’ weight.
I’ve finally learned (some might call me a slow learner) what works for me. Positive affirmations, healthy amounts of exercise, lots of fruits, vegetables, and bread, and a moderate amount of sweets and proteins. The keto diet worked the best at melting away pounds, but my weight always plateaued around the seventh month of eating such a restrictive diet. I tried intermittant fasting, too. Eating healthfully and mindfully, exercising to make myself happy, and using positive self-talk works better than any of those fads.
I’ve also discovered why you need to stop beating yourself up over weight gain and what you can do instead of self-flagellation. You can try it, too!
