You can develop a fixed mindset at any point in your life. Fortunately, you can adopt a growth mindset at any time in your life, too!

Do YOU Suffer From a Fixed Mindset?

“I’ll never get good at this!” my student wailed as she pushed her mountain bike up the rocky incline. She practically flung her bike down at the top and turned to watch me. “How do you do that?” she said. “I can’t believe an old lady cleaned that hill and I had to walk up it.”

“Who are you calling old?” I stopped next to her.

“Not you, I guess,” she grumbled. “You’re not even breathing hard.”

“To answer your question,” I said, “practice. I’ve had a lot of practice. And mindset.”

“What’s mindset?” she wanted to know.

“It’s your attitude,” I explained. “If you have a negative attitude about learning a new skill, you probably will never learn it. But if you have a positive attitude, you probably will learn.”

“That sounds too easy.”

“Well, you still have to practice,” I said. “But your practice will help you make progress a lot faster if you think you’ll actually accomplish it one day.”

Six years later, after lots of practice, my sweet student can keep up with me on mountain bike rides. In fact, she’s usually far ahead of me. I have a fear of crashing, so I don’t take chances going downhill. I could probably overcome this, but at my age, I choose bodily safety over keeping up with the youngsters on the downhill.

A person with a fixed mindset sees a failure as a wall. A person with a growth mindset will see the wall but look around for tools to get over it. #mindset #lifelonglearning #selfcare Click To Tweet
