What does ‘more of Jesus, less of me’ mean to you? Is it just a symbol with no meaning? Or something you try to practice in your life?

Symbol or Suntan Lotion?

“What does that sticker in the back window of Miss Ortiz’s car mean?” one of my students asked me.

I laughed. “For a long time, I thought it had to do with Hawaiian suntan lotion or something.”

“Me, too!” another student chimed in. “It looks all flowery and Hawaiian.”

“I finally figured it out during math class one day,” I said.

“Math class? How could you figure out a bumper sticker in math class?”

“Easy. The first two letters are H-E, then the ‘greater than’ symbol, than an I.”

“Oh. I thought it said, ‘HEKI’ with a weird backward K.”

“Nope. That equation means ‘He is greater than I.’”

“Who is he?” my first student asked.

“Jesus,” the other student exclaimed.

“Duh.” The first student palm-slapped herself. “I get it now.”

“Hey, don’t feel bad,” I said, “it took me a while, too.”

The bell rang and my students rushed off to their next class, leaving me to contemplate what more of Jesus, less of me should look like in my life.

More of Jesus, Less of Me

Maybe more of Jesus, less of me looks like:

What does 'more of Jesus, less of me' mean to you? Is it just a symbol with no meaning? Or something you try to practice in your life? #He>i #Christian #Christianwalk #selfcare #Jesus
  • Trusting Jesus more and worrying less about me (or Coronavirus).
  • Praying more when tense situations arise and caring less about my rights and opinion.
  • Listening for the Holy Spirit to guide me more and talking less.
  • Spending more time each morning reading my Bible and praying and less time on my hair and makeup.
  • Thanking Jesus more for the ways he’s blessed me and whining less.
  • Caring more for Creation and less about my personal comfort.
  • Pausing more to listen to others and insisting less that we do things my way.
  • Getting to know the true character of Jesus more so that I can let go of the parts of me that reflect him less.
  • Reaching out more to the people Jesus ministered to when he was here and spending less time in my comfort zone.

Oddly enough, I found out while writing this that He>i actually hales from Hawai’i after all. They don’t sell suntan lotion, though. Instead, they offer items with the He>i logo for those who want to make a statement about their goal in life. He becomes greater, I become less (you can read the whole story in John 3:29-31).
